Tiger Airways History

Tiger Airways, based in Singapore, first started operating in late 2004 and has since established a strong reputation for offering cheap commercial flights between Australia and Asia ever since. After surviving some initial turbulence in the Australian market thanks to economic elements such as high oil prices they have since consolidated their position.

Tiger Airways have been well known for taking up unpopular routes – such as the Macau and Krabi routes – which weren’t economical for the big airlines such as Singapore Airways.

Tiger Airways did remarkably well in its first year of operation and carried over 500,000 passengers on more than five thousand flights and successfully ran on time for over 90% of those.

Tiger Airways only uses one type of aircraft – it operates nine Airbus A320-200 running on International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 engines, which maintains a good record as a safe and reliable aircraft. Tiger Airways decided to use only one type of aircraft in order to keep maintenance and operational costs to a minimum which plays a part in allowing them to continue to offer their customers lower prices.

Tiger Airways successfully operates one of the most modern fleet of aircraft amongst the cheap flights airlines.

Tiger Airways now operates many different routes across Australia and south-east Asia and has been buoyed by good growth in regions such as China and India and is currently increasing its presence in the South Korean area.
